Our Camp Life

8/23/2015
So we spent the weekend at Palisades again, which is slowly but surely becoming our favorite place to camp.

Coming home after spending the weekend in the mountains and completely disconnected from the world makes me feel like my battery has a full charge. I never feel so free as I do when I can lose cell service and find my own inner peace that comes from the simplicity of nature. Camping makes me realize what incredibly little I actually need in order to be truly happy.

The smoke from the wildfires is insanely thick right now in Idaho which, although you could hardly see the mountains on the other side of the reservoir, it made for a beautiful blood-orange sunrise. We also encountered some gruesome winds which made us feel like we were kayaking in the ocean. It was so dang fun riding those waves! Also, a great workout so, that's a plus.

^^ a three hour drive with kids! and if you think that sounds fun, it took us FOUR to get home! kids are not made to sit that long in a car. uggghhh.

^^ this mirror obviously needs a really good scrubbin.

^^ this is the story of my weekends while camping with a one year old: picking him up and moving him somewhere safe! Over and over and over again. Another great workout, you know.

^^ teaching him to stay away from the fire this year has finally proven to be a success! Even so. He likes to try and throw things in the fire now, so. On to the next I suppose...

^^ this boy is insane on the bike already. He loves to cruise on the rocky, bumpy mountain roads. My kinda kid!

^^ always wearing his brother's helmet.

^^ blood-orange sunrise. gooooooooood mornin' beautiful!

^^ the best part of waking up...

^^ the travels of my yoga mat.

^^ he wasn't so sure about the wind...

^^ our little princess.

^^ I wear socks with sandals because I'm sexy and I know it.

^^ no but really, this camp spot is a dream.

^^ morning faces!

Such a needed weekend with my loves. Camping with kids is no easy feat you guys, but it's always so worth it! I've told you that before, no?

There is a quote on the movie Interstellar that I fell in love with as soon as it came out of Matthew McConaughey's mouth:

"Now we’re just here to make memories for our kids. We are the ghosts of our children’s future."

That quote kind of rocked my core. I think about it all of the time.

We go on these camping trips and while it's not very easy at these ages, I think about how much it is going to impact their lives, how many memories they are making and how many traditions we are subtly introducing to them. For example, and this is silly but, we buy a 12 pack of Cactus Cooler every time we camp. It started on accident and then just kept going, where each time we grocery shop for our camping trip we buy Cactus Cooler in the cans. It's been ongoing all summer long and just this weekend I realized that if we keep this tradition going for the next eighteen years or so, Cactus Cooler will always hold a place in our children's hearts. Even after we are gone, far into the future they will open a can of orange-pineapple soda and with it hundreds of memories from their childhood days spent in the mountains with us.

Over and over again, through even the tiny moments and things, we are unknowingly sculpting their nostalgia collection for the rest of their lives. We are creating memories for them like writing a book, only we aren't the writers, we are the illustrators of the book. We are painting pictures in their minds that they will have to take with them everywhere they go.

We are the ghosts of our children's future. And isn't that beautiful?

I love camping with my crew.
